Forest Trails

Cameron Highlands

Mossy Forest in Gunung BrinchangTrail to Gunung Brinchang

Where to Go ~ Forest Trails

Cameron Highlands has several forest trails for serious hiking or casual climber. Most of these trails lead up to the peak of several mountains, the difficulty depending on the terrain and weather conditions. Each path is officially tagged with a number, and this can be viewed from any of the tourist maps of Cameron Highlands available in all the town sundry shops.

Most of the trails are marked with signboards, but some of them are quite dilapidated and may even point in the wrong direction! It's handy to purchase one of those pocket maps so you can chart your way around with ease. Standard jungle trekking protocol, such as good hiking shoes, bottle of water and light clothing, apply here.

For an easy hike through pristine jungle, try the trail that winds from Parit Falls to the watch tower. You can access Path 4 through the side of Century Pines Resort, the Forestry Department Office or the main entrance to Parit Falls, which lies between the former and latter. Along the path, there is a steep trail that leads up to the watch tower, a short distance away from the Parit Falls itself.

For a tougher trek, try the jungle trail to Gunung Brinchang that starts from the Water Supply Department quarters (JBA) near Brinchang Town. From the entry point, it is approximately two hours by foot to the peak, passing by lush greenery along the way. There used to be orchids, pitcher plants and colourful shrubs dotting this trail, but such sights are now rare due to destruction and over-collection from botanists.

The trail is quite level for the first half of the journey, with more steep ascents in the final half. At some points, be prepared to climb up vertical wood-faces without slipping on the wet surfaces. The trail is marked by a strategic red dot at certain trees, so look out for it if you seem to lose your way. Finishers will be rewarded with a magnificent view from the peak (in clear weather) and can hike down the tarred road back to Brinchang town.
